Il porte sa proximit\u00e9 avec le peuple dans son nom. Il mourut vers 350 alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait \u00e9v\u00eaque de la ville de Myre (aujourd\u2019hui la ville turque de Demre). Au Moyen-\u00c2ge il fut aussi c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 comme chef spirituel. On y apprend comment Nicolas apporta son aide \u00e0 des marins en d\u00e9tresse. Il ne les aida pas comme le fit J\u00e9sus en apaisant d\u2019un mot la temp\u00eate. Il les secourut d\u2019une main invisible apport\u00e9e \u00bbaux voiles et aux cordages\u00ab, si bien qu\u2019ils surv\u00e9curent \u00e0 la temp\u00eate et rejoinrent le rivage. Les marins comprirent ainsi que leur action fut importante. Ils ne furent pas les t\u00e9moins passifs d\u2019un miracle sans confiance, mais les acteurs collectifs de leur destin. Ainsi Nicolas devint porteur d\u2019espoir pour les marins en danger. Et il devint aussi leur mod\u00e8le, ami et secours. C\u2019est pourquoi de nombreuses \u00e9glises construites en bord de mer sont consacr\u00e9es \u00e0 Saint-Nicolas.
